What's The Difference Between A Crown and A Bridge?

A crown and a bridge solve two different problems. A crown covers and protects a single damaged tooth that’s still there, while a bridge fills the gap where one or more teeth are missing entirely, anchored to the crowns on either side. Here’s how each one works.

Dental Crowns

A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a single tooth, covering it completely to protect and strengthen it after decay, a fracture, or a root canal. It's used when the tooth itself is still there but needs reinforcing.

Best For
Cracked or fractured teeth Large fillings that weaken a tooth Teeth after root canal treatment

Dental Bridges

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring a false tooth to the crowns fitted on either side of the gap. Unlike a crown, it's used when a tooth is gone entirely and needs to be replaced, not just protected.

Best For
One or more missing teeth in a row Restoring bite and chewing function Preventing surrounding teeth from shifting

What's The Process Of Crown or Bridge?

A crown or bridge doesn’t happen in a single step, and every case is a little different depending on what needs restoring. Here’s a quick look at how each treatment comes together, from your first consultation through to the finished result.

We'll start with a thorough examination and discuss your dental needs and goals, taking x-rays to assess the condition of the tooth and plan the right treatment for it.

The affected tooth is gently smoothed and reshaped to accommodate the crown, with 3-D digital images captured using our PRIMESCAN scanner to design your custom restoration, avoiding the discomfort of traditional physical moulds. If your crown isn't ready the same day, a temporary crown protects the tooth in the meantime.

Once your custom crown is ready, it's carefully fitted and adjusted for comfort and proper function, making sure the final restoration blends seamlessly with your natural teeth.

We'll schedule a follow-up appointment to check the fit and function of your crown and address any concerns. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene help keep it looking its best for years to come.

We'll examine the gap left by your missing tooth or teeth and take x-rays to check the health of the surrounding teeth and bone, then map out whether your bridge will be anchored to natural teeth or dental implants.

The teeth on either side of the gap are smoothed and reshaped to hold the anchoring crowns, with 3-D digital scans taken on our PRIMESCAN scanner to design your bridge. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth and maintain function while your permanent restoration is crafted.

Your custom bridge is carefully fitted and adjusted for comfort and proper bite alignment, blending seamlessly with the teeth on either side so the gap is fully restored.

We'll check the fit and function of your bridge at a follow-up visit and show you how to clean underneath it properly. With regular check-ups and good oral hygiene, a well-maintained bridge can last for many years.

FAQs

No. We use local anaesthetic to numb the area before any preparation begins, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. Some mild sensitivity around the tooth is normal for a day or two afterward.

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, crowns and bridges typically last 10 to 15 years or longer, though this depends on the material used and how well the restoration is cared for.

A crown is used when the tooth is still there but needs protecting, such as after a root canal or a fracture. A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth entirely. We’ll assess your teeth and recommend the right option for your situation.

Same-day crowns are milled from a solid block of durable ceramic, shaded and shaped to match your surrounding teeth using our CEREC Primemill. It’s the same strong, natural-looking material as a lab-made crown, just finished here in the practice while you wait.

Brush and floss as you normally would, paying extra attention to the gumline and, for bridges, the area underneath the false tooth. Avoiding excessive force on the restoration (like chewing ice) and keeping up with regular check-ups will help it last as long as possible.

Yes. We digitally scan your teeth using our PRIMESCAN scanner and custom-design each restoration to match the shape, size, and shade of your surrounding teeth, so it blends in seamlessly.
