Book NowEmergency Care, When It Just Can't Wait
Dental pain doesn’t keep business hours. A tooth cracks over the weekend, a filling comes out, swelling appears overnight, and suddenly you need to be seen quickly rather than in three weeks.
That’s why we hold time in the schedule every day for urgent appointments. Call us in the morning and we can usually see you the same day.
If you’re in pain now, please call (03) 9499 1130. We’ll find out what’s causing it and get you comfortable.

When Should You Book an Emergency Visit?
Dental problems rarely wait for a convenient moment. If any of these sound like what you’re dealing with, don’t wait it out. Get in touch and we’ll see you as soon as we can.
Toothache and ongoing pain
A throbbing ache, or pain that lingers after something hot or cold, usually means decay or infection has reached the nerve. Pain that wakes you at night is worth ringing about first thing in the morning.
Broken, chipped or cracked tooth
A small chip might only need smoothing over. A cracked tooth can get worse quickly if it's left alone, so it's better seen while the repair is still a simple one.
Knocked out tooth
Time matters with this one. Hold the tooth by the crown rather than the root, keep it in milk or saliva, and call us straight away. The sooner it goes back in, the better the chance of saving it.
Swelling or an abscess
Swelling around a tooth, the jaw or the cheek usually points to an infection, and infections don't clear up on their own. This is one to be seen for promptly rather than left over a weekend.
Lost filling, crown or veneer
Once a restoration comes out, the tooth underneath is exposed and often sensitive. Hang on to the crown if you still have it, because in many cases it can be cleaned up and refitted.
Bleeding that won't settle
Bleeding from the gums, or from the socket after an extraction, should be checked if firm pressure on a clean gauze for twenty minutes hasn't brought it under control.
Wisdom tooth pain
Pain, pressure or swelling at the back of the jaw from a wisdom tooth pushing through. Much easier to manage before it turns into an infection, so it's worth having assessed early.
Something stuck, or a sports injury
Something wedged between teeth that floss won't shift, or a knock to the mouth playing sport. Worth a look even if it feels alright, since cracks and loosened teeth aren't always obvious straight away.
Not sure how urgent it is? Give us a call and describe what's happening. Our Ivanhoe team will help you work out the best next step and get you booked in.

FAQs
What counts as a dental emergency?
Any problem needing urgent care to ease severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth — a knocked-out or broken tooth, bad toothache, an abscess or facial swelling, a lost filling or crown, or a mouth injury. If you’re unsure how serious it is, call us.
I've knocked out a tooth, what should I do right now?
Hold it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently in milk or water, and if you can, pop it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in a cup of milk and call us straight away, quick action gives the best chance of saving it.
I'm in a lot of pain, can I be seen today?
We keep room in our day for emergencies and will do our best to see you the same day. Call as early as you can so we can prioritise you and help you manage until you arrive.
What can I do for a toothache before my appointment?
Rinse with warm salt water, take pain relief from the chemist as directed, and hold a cold compress to your cheek. Avoid placing aspirin on the gum, and if the pain is severe or ongoing, have it checked.
My face or gum is swollen, is that serious?
Swelling can be a sign of infection, so call us promptly. If it’s spreading quickly, affecting your eye or neck, or making it hard to breathe or swallow, call 000 or go to hospital.
I've broken or chipped a tooth, what now?
Rinse with warm water, keep any pieces, and use a cold compress for swelling. Even a painless chip should be seen so it doesn’t get worse or become infected.
My filling or crown has come out, is it an emergency?
It’s usually not dangerous, but it’s best seen soon while the tooth is exposed. Keep the crown if you have it, avoid chewing on that side, and give us a call.
