Professional Teeth Whitening, A Long Lasting Bright Smile

Teeth whitening is one of the simplest ways to refresh your smile, lifting years of stains from coffee, wine, and everyday wear to reveal a noticeably brighter result. At Smile Connections, we offer two ways to get there: in-chair whitening for a fast, professionally supervised result in a single visit, or a take-home kit with custom-fitted trays you use at your own pace. Both use professional-grade whitening gel that’s far more effective than anything available over the counter, and we’ll help you choose the option that best suits your smile and your schedule.

What Are The Different Options For Teeth Whitening?

Whether you’re after a fast, noticeable difference or prefer to work up to your ideal shade gradually, we’ve got two ways to get there. Take a look at how in-chair and take-home whitening compare below, so you can choose the option that best fits your goals and your schedule.

In-chair teeth whitening in Ivanhoe

In-chair whitening

Done here in one appointment. You come in with your teeth one shade and go home with them lighter the same day, which is why people usually pick it when there's a wedding, a birthday or a holiday coming up.

What to expect
1

We check first. Whitening over decay or exposed roots is a bad idea, so your teeth and gums get looked at before anything else. We also record your starting shade, so at the end you can see the difference rather than trying to remember it.

2

Getting you ready. Your gums and lips are covered with a barrier so the gel only touches enamel. This is the bit chemist kits can't do, and it's why they sting.

3

The whitening itself. The gel goes on and gets activated with a light. Set aside 60 to 90 minutes and bring headphones, because there's not much for you to do.

Aftercare

Go easy on coffee, red wine, curries and anything strongly coloured for a day or two afterwards. Some sensitivity is normal, it tends to show up a few hours later, and it usually settles within a couple of days.

Benefits
Whiter the same day Done with a dentist watching One appointment and you're finished
Take-home teeth whitening kit in Ivanhoe

Take-home whitening

The same professional gel at a lower strength, used in your own time. It takes a couple of weeks rather than an afternoon, and you fit it around your week instead of booking out a morning.

What to expect
1

We check first. Same as in chair, we make sure everything's healthy before you start. Then we take impressions or a scan so your trays are made to your teeth and nobody else's.

2

Your trays and gel. The trays hold the gel against your teeth and keep it off your gums, which is the main thing the one size fits all kits get wrong.

3

Wearing them. You wear them for a set time each day over a couple of weeks. We'll tell you exactly how long based on the gel we send you home with, so don't go off what a friend was told.

Aftercare

If your teeth start feeling sensitive, drop back to every second day rather than pushing through. It still works, it just takes a little longer. We'll check how you're getting on partway through.

Benefits
Fits around your week Trays made to fit your teeth Easier to manage if you get sensitivity

So which one should you go with?

In-chair whiteningGo with this if you want it done now, or you've got something on soon and can't wait a fortnight.

Take-home whiteningGo with this if you'd rather take it slowly, or your teeth have given you grief with sensitivity before.

FAQs

In-chair whitening is performed in our clinic and delivers immediate, dramatic results in a single 60–90 minute session. Take-home whitening uses custom-fitted trays and professional-grade gel you apply yourself over a couple of weeks, giving you a more gradual result at your own pace.

Results vary depending on your diet, lifestyle, and oral hygiene, but most patients enjoy a brighter smile for 1–2 years before a top-up is needed. Avoiding heavily staining foods and drinks like coffee, red wine, and tobacco will help your results last longer.

Yes, when performed or supervised by a dental professional. We assess your teeth and gums beforehand to make sure whitening is suitable for you, and use professional-grade products that are far more controlled than over-the-counter alternatives.

Some temporary sensitivity is common with both in-chair and take-home whitening, and usually settles within a few days. We’ll give you aftercare instructions to help manage this, and can adjust your treatment plan if sensitivity becomes an issue.

The cost depends on which option you choose, in-chair or take-home, and your individual whitening goals. Book a free consultation with our Ivanhoe team and we’ll assess your teeth and provide a personalised quote.

Whitening is highly effective on surface stains caused by food, drink, and lifestyle habits. However, it won’t change the colour of fillings, crowns, or veneers, so we’ll talk through your options during a consultation if you have existing dental work.
