What Are The Different Options For Teeth Whitening?
Whether you’re after a fast, noticeable difference or prefer to work up to your ideal shade gradually, we’ve got two ways to get there. Take a look at how in-chair and take-home whitening compare below, so you can choose the option that best fits your goals and your schedule.
In-chair whitening
Done here in one appointment. You come in with your teeth one shade and go home with them lighter the same day, which is why people usually pick it when there's a wedding, a birthday or a holiday coming up.
We check first. Whitening over decay or exposed roots is a bad idea, so your teeth and gums get looked at before anything else. We also record your starting shade, so at the end you can see the difference rather than trying to remember it.
Getting you ready. Your gums and lips are covered with a barrier so the gel only touches enamel. This is the bit chemist kits can't do, and it's why they sting.
The whitening itself. The gel goes on and gets activated with a light. Set aside 60 to 90 minutes and bring headphones, because there's not much for you to do.
Go easy on coffee, red wine, curries and anything strongly coloured for a day or two afterwards. Some sensitivity is normal, it tends to show up a few hours later, and it usually settles within a couple of days.
Take-home whitening
The same professional gel at a lower strength, used in your own time. It takes a couple of weeks rather than an afternoon, and you fit it around your week instead of booking out a morning.
We check first. Same as in chair, we make sure everything's healthy before you start. Then we take impressions or a scan so your trays are made to your teeth and nobody else's.
Your trays and gel. The trays hold the gel against your teeth and keep it off your gums, which is the main thing the one size fits all kits get wrong.
Wearing them. You wear them for a set time each day over a couple of weeks. We'll tell you exactly how long based on the gel we send you home with, so don't go off what a friend was told.
If your teeth start feeling sensitive, drop back to every second day rather than pushing through. It still works, it just takes a little longer. We'll check how you're getting on partway through.
