New Patient Comprehensive Check-Up & Clean

Check-Up & Cleans, Your Foundation for a Healthy Smile

Every visit at Smile Connections starts with a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and jaw, backed by digital x-rays where needed, so we can catch decay, cracks or bone loss long before you’d ever feel them yourself. It’s the appointment we recommend every six months, because small problems caught early are almost always a quick, straightforward fix rather than something bigger down the track. Beyond the exam, a clean covers a full scale and polish to clear away plaque and tartar buildup, plus a standard gum health and oral cancer screening.

What's Included In A Dental Check Up & Clean?

A check-up and clean is more than just a quick look and a polish. Each visit brings together a full examination, a professional clean and a few extra checks along the way, all aimed at catching small issues early and keeping your smile in good shape between visits. Here’s exactly what’s covered.

Check-up & clean

What's included in your visit

A proper examination

We go over your teeth, gums and jaw looking for decay, cracks and wear, along with anything else that's far easier to deal with now than it will be in six months.

Digital x-rays

Taken when they're needed, so we can see between your teeth, underneath old fillings and around the jaw. A lot goes on below the surface that no visual check will pick up.

Scale and polish

The clean itself. We take off the plaque and the hardened tartar a toothbrush can't shift, particularly along the gum line and behind the bottom front teeth where it always builds up.

Gum health check

We look for the early signs of gum disease. Bleeding when you brush, puffiness, gums starting to pull back from the teeth. Caught early it's very manageable, left alone it isn't.

Oral cancer screening

A look over your mouth, tongue and throat for anything out of the ordinary. It takes a minute and it happens at every visit, and it's the kind of check that counts for most when something turns up early.

Advice you can use

Where you're missing with the brush, whether floss or interdental brushes suit your teeth better, and what needs doing next if anything does. Specific to your mouth rather than general tips.

FAQs

We generally recommend a check-up and clean every six months, though some patients benefit from more frequent visits depending on their oral health, gum condition, or risk of decay. We’ll let you know what’s right for you at your appointment.

Not necessarily. X-rays are usually taken once every 12–24 months, or sooner if we need to check something specific. They help us see decay, bone levels and other issues that aren’t visible during a standard exam.

Most patients find it comfortable, with maybe some mild sensitivity if there’s a build-up of tartar or if your gums are a little inflamed. This settles quickly, and we’ll always let you know before doing anything that might feel uncomfortable.

We’ll talk you through anything we find, whether it’s a small cavity, early gum disease, or something that needs a closer look, and explain your options. Nothing gets treated on the spot without you knowing about it first.

It’s a good idea to bring your child in for their first check-up around their first birthday, or once their first teeth start coming through. Earlier visits help catch issues early and get kids comfortable with the dentist.

Most private health funds with extras cover at least part of the cost of a check-up and clean, though this depends on your level of cover. We recommend checking with your provider before your visit so you know what to expect.
