Book NowFillings, Natural-Looking Tooth-Coloured Restorations
A cavity doesn’t have to mean a big deal. At Smile Connections, our fillings use tooth-coloured composite resin, not old-style metal, so once it’s in place, the repair is barely noticeable. It’s the treatment we do most often, because catching decay early usually means a straightforward, single visit fix rather than something more involved down the track. Beyond new cavities, fillings also cover replacing old amalgam or discoloured restorations, and rebuilding a tooth that’s chipped or worn.
Every appointment starts with a proper look at the tooth, digital x-rays included, so we know exactly what we’re dealing with before any drilling starts. Local anaesthetic keeps things comfortable, and most fillings are done and finished within the same visit. Our Ivanhoe team will walk you through what’s happening at each step, so nothing catches you off guard.

What's The Process Of A Dental Filling?
Fillings are one of the quicker jobs we do. Four stages, one appointment, and you’re out the door with the tooth sorted. There’s no healing period to work around the way there is with an implant or a crown. We’ll tell you what we’re doing as we go, so nothing that happens in the chair comes as a surprise.
Step 01 of 04
Checking the tooth
We look at the tooth and take an x-ray if we need to see how far the decay has travelled, because what looks small on the surface is often bigger underneath. Then we'll tell you what we're recommending and why before we start.
Numbing up and clearing the decay
Local anaesthetic goes in first and we wait until you're properly numb before anything else happens. Then the decayed part of the tooth comes out and the area is cleaned, so the filling has something solid to bond to.
Building up the filling
Tooth coloured composite goes on in thin layers, and each layer is set hard with a blue light before the next one goes on. The shade is matched to your tooth, so once it's finished you'd have to look closely to find it.
Shaping, bite check and polish
We trim the filling to the shape of the tooth, then get you to bite on coloured paper to check it isn't sitting high. Speak up if it feels off. It's a two minute adjustment now and a fortnight of annoyance if it's left. Then it's polished smooth and you're done.

FAQs
What type of fillings do you use?
We use tooth-coloured composite resin fillings, which bond directly to your natural tooth structure and blend in with the rest of your smile. Unlike traditional silver amalgam fillings, composite is virtually undetectable once it’s in place.
How do I know if I need a filling?
Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods, a visible dark spot or pit, or a rough patch you can feel with your tongue can all be potentional signs of decay. Cavities don’t always cause noticeable symptoms though, which is why we check for them during your routine examinations and x-rays before they have a chance to grow.
Is getting a filling painful?
No. We numb the area with a local anaesthetic before removing any decay, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure itself. It’s normal to notice some mild sensitivity to hot, cold or pressure for a few days afterwards, but this settles on its own.
How long does a filling take?
Most fillings are completed in a single visit, usually somewhere between 20 and 60 minutes depending on the size and location of the cavity and how many surfaces of the tooth are involved.
How long do composite fillings last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, composite fillings typically last somewhere between 5 and 10 years, though this varies depending on their size, location, and how much daily wear they’re exposed to. We keep an eye on your fillings at each visit and let you know if one is due for replacement.
Can you replace my old metal (amalgam) fillings?
Yes, old amalgam or discoloured fillings can be removed and replaced with tooth-coloured composite during a standard filling appointment, giving your smile a more natural, seamless look.
What if the tooth is too damaged for a filling?
If decay or damage is too extensive for a filling to properly restore the tooth, we may recommend a crown instead to protect what’s left of the tooth structure. In many cases, this can be done as a same-day treatment.
